Currency

The official currency used on the Chinese mainland is the Chinese yuan (CNY), also known as renminbi (RMB), meaning “the people’s money”. The character used for the currency is 元 . 1 Euro is equivalent to 7.75 RMB and 1 USD equals approx. 7.25 RMB (as of 04/2024).

After arriving in China, you may want to go to the currency exchange at the airport and exchange some of your country’s currency for Chinese RMB. However, you may quickly find out that it is no longer common to use cash. While most places would accept cash, taxi drivers, for instance, may not have exact change on hand.

Debit and credit cards are also not widely accepted. Therefore, it is recommended to download a phone application to bind your bank or credit card to it, which will allow you to make payments by phone

Mobile Payment

The most common way to make mobile phone payments is by using Alipay or WeChat Pay. In the following, you can find instructions on how to set up the Alipay app.

Step 1: Search for “Alipay” in your mobile app store and download the app.
Step 2: Open the app and register for an Alipay account with your phone number
Step 3: Link a bank card or credit card by clicking on the Account icon in the lower right corner and then “Bank Card”. After that, follow the prompts to add the card and set up a payment password.

Step 4: Pay by scanning the vendor’s QR code or by showing your own QR payment code. To scan the vendor’s QR code, click on the icon “Scan”. To show your QR payment code, click on “Pay/Collect”. Afterwards, you will be prompted to enter your payment password.
